The Government of Alberta introduced law stamps in 1906, requiring them to be purchased and affixed to documents filed in legal proceedings as proof that filing fees had been paid. After twenty-five years, and three distinct issues of stamps, Alberta's court registries introduced cash registers and modern accounting practices in 1930, reducing law stamps to the status of colourful but obsolete relics.
