A servant of the court.

Starting in 1881, each judicial district could appoint a sheriff to transport prisoners, serve documents on participants in court cases and carry out orders issued from the court, which included the seizure and sale of property and goods. In 1996, their role changed to focus on providing courtroom security and training civilian authorities to undertake seizures.
