The government’s lawyer.
Created by the North-West Territories in 1897 and continued by the new Province of Alberta, the Department of the Attorney General managed legal issues involving the government, including administration of the court system. Known now as the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General, the Ministry’s Court Services Division provides administrative support to the court system but is not involved in how judicial officials interpret the law.
In cases requiring the presence of the government (referred to as the Crown), the Attorney General, department staff, or a local agent, now known as a Crown Prosecutor, represents the province in the courtroom.
