An entry into the legal system.

In 1897, the North-West Territories began to appoint magistrates to act as an entry point into the province’s justice system, a practice continued by the new Province of Alberta. While rural magistrates often worked alone, some larger towns and cities created special police or magistrates courts to address civil and criminal matters. The Provincial Court Act of 1971 replaced magistrates’ courts with a new Provincial Court of Alberta.
